Many thanks to the Borough of Audubon and the Audubon Celebration Committee for selecting Sustainable Audubon as the Grand Marshal of the 2021 4th of July parade.
A grassroots organization, both figuratively and literally, Sustainable Audubon is powered by the efforts of an all-volunteer group of citizens. Established in 2014, the mission of Sustainable Audubon is to promote environmental awareness and sustainability in our Borough. This is done through outreach education and by creating and maintaining programs which have a direct benefit to the environment and our overall well-being.
Energy concerns are at the heart of many Sustainable Audubon programs. Responsible consumption, alternative energy sources, and waste reduction are key motivations in on-going and planned actions. The current Single Stream Recycling and Backyard Composting programs are two successful examples. A new initiative, known as Energy Tracking and Management, will track the utility use of Borough owned buildings. This tracking will provide a benchmark for both performance and cost, and will quantify future improvements when building upgrades are made or new and cheaper utilities are sourced. Sustainable Audubon is working with the Mayor’s Wellness Campaign on an action for “Building Healthier Communities” focusing on health and wellness in the community. Also, an Anti-Idling Initiative, Reusable Bag Education Program and a Green Film series are soon to be realized.
Sustainable Audubon’s programs which focus on the safety and well-being of our community are equally important. Underway are the Prescription Drug Drop-Off Program and Tobacco Free Municipal Building Ordinance which have had a great impact on protecting our health. Action plans outlining Safe Routes to School will promote safe biking and walking to school.
Sustainable Audubon is registered with the state-wide Sustainable Jersey. With nearly 400 participating communities, Sustainable Jersey collects and shares chapter programs and provides guidance and training to best implement a program. This exchange of information is a powerful aid for the many volunteers who strive to make our town better. For every successful program launched and maintained, points accumulate towards a Bronze or Silver Certification by Sustainable Jersey. With the points already secured, Sustainable Audubon hopes to reach Bronze Certification in the next year.
Hopefully, Sustainable Audubon’s programs are personally of interest to you. If you would like to know more, please visit their website at sustainableaudubon.com. The Green Team will also be available to talk to you at National Night Out on August 7th. Stop by their table and sign the Green Challenge Pledge. By volunteering we shape our future, a future which requires wise environmental stewardship and sustainable practices.
